Each year, with the help of my wife Janet, I run three or four weekend courses for artists interested in pastel techniques. We use Burley Village Hall, an ideal venue with excellent facilities, right in the heart of the New Forest.
PASTEL FOR BEGINNERS: a course designed specifically for artists who want to venture into this exciting medium for the first time, or if artists want to recap on a medium they have neglected - the weekend includes a demonstration, lots of tips and helpful advice on techniques. Everyone produces a painting - maybe two!
PASTEL WORKSHOP FOR IMPROVERS: When artists are a little more experienced, this is the opportunity to develop pastel techniques. Students bring along their own ideas or accept the challenge of subjects set by me. The aim is to complete one or two paintings by the end of the weekend.
MOVING ON: Another popular workshop weekend for those with a bit more experience and wanting to motor on. Again there's an opportunity for artists to bring along their own ideas or let me set the subjects. The course aims to be productive and produce a painting or two for exhibition.
PERSPECTIVE & LIGHT AND SHADE: This course is applicable to all artists whichever medium they prefer to work in. A thorough knowledge of both perspective and the principles of light & shade are essential tools and my aim is to help participants get a firm grip and understanding of both these aspects and give them greater confidence for painting and sketching in the future. The weekend will result in a big sheaf of easily understandable notes for future reference.

COURSES / WORKSHOPS AT ART CLUB VENUES: The above topics can be combined in various ways to create one-day or weekend workshops at fees to be arranged.
CRITIQUES: Another artist's viewpoint on club members' work can be helpful and stimulating. Impartiality is very important too. I aim to be constructive and helpful in a friendly manner, and although as a painter specialising in pastel, I am fully conversant with other media and the technical aspects required to produce a painting. I also endeavour to build in some tuition into my critiques.
